Job Description

ATM Biomechanical Engineer III Job Description

The biomechanical engineer III will report to the R&D Sr. Group Product Manager of the Advanced Tissue Models team.  This person will play a pivotal role in the development and improvement of innovative anatomical simulation models used for da Vinci surgical and Ion endoluminal system training.  This role requires a high level of technical expertise, project management proficiency, exceptional communication skills, a deep understanding of the surgical training pathway, and the ability to proactively identify future product needs. The biomechanical engineer III will work closely with surgeons, trainers, engineering, operations, ATM manufacturing and other stakeholders, including Intuitive product and clinical teams, to ensure the successful development and implementation of cutting-edge training models.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Prototype Design & Innovation: Design, develop, and iterate on complex prototype organic and synthetic tissue models based on internal and external feedback, including input from surgeon Key Opinion Leaders (KOLs). Demonstrate a high level of creativity in the design of new models and supporting equipment. Independently collaborate with Intuitive product and clinical teams to determine future indications and potential needs for future models. Conduct research, analyzing data to develop future-forward concepts for new product designs.
  • Documentation & Training: Create comprehensive documentation for prototype model assembly, collaborating with the trainer and engineering team for seamless production transfer. This includes developing work instructions, assisting in QC document creation, training the production trainer, and creating instructions for use and setup videos.
  • Production Transition & Support: Manage the product release process from phase 1-5 for complex product types. Collaborate effectively with the operations team to resolve production issues. Manage vendor relationships during projects.
  • Surgical Training & Collaboration: Communicate effectively with surgeon KOLs regarding product specifications and performance feedback. Possess an in-depth understanding of the surgeon technology training pathway. Develop new da Vinci skills exercises using ATM products.
  • Da Vinci Expertise & Training: Possess expert knowledge of Intuitive products and a high level of da Vinci surgical system skill proficiency. Train others on the use of the da Vinci system.
  • Research & Analysis: Conduct research, analyze data, and interpret results to solve problems related to tissue model design and performance.
  • Project Management & Leadership: Manage projects, including planning, execution, and budgeting. Consistently strive to achieve goals; identify issues, propose solutions, and expect personal commitment of each team member. Work to improve team dynamics and build relationships across teams.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Understand and adhere to regulatory compliance requirements pertaining to product design.
  • Continuous Improvement: Work across departments to manage Continuous Improvement (CI) projects.
  • Technical Design & Prototyping: Design products using CAD systems. Design and build prototype reusable hardware to be used in conjunction with organic and synthetic tissue models.
  • Communication & Collaboration: Make effective presentations in small or larger group settings, clearly communicating technical/team information. Collaborate effectively with teams across the organization.

Qualifications

Required Skills and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in Biomechanical Engineering or a related field. Master's degree preferred.
  • Significant experience in prototype development and iteration, specifically with complex projects.
  • Experience in a laboratory or manufacturing environment.
  • Strong documentation and training skills.
  • Experience communicating with medical professionals, preferably surgeons.
  • Demonstrated expert-level proficiency with the da Vinci surgical system and the ability to train others.
  • Proven project management and leadership experience.
  • Deep understanding of regulatory compliance in medical device design.
  • Advanced Agile skills.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Familiarity with medical terminology and common procedures.  
  • CAD design experience.

Desired Skills and Experience:

  • Experience with organic and or synthetic tissue model development.
  • Experience with hydrogels.
  • Proficient in a variety of manufacturing techniques, including thermoforming, machining, 3D printing, casting, and more.Experience with medical device manufacturing and or training.
  • Experience managing vendor relationships.
  • Experience with instructional design and training materials development.
  • Experience developing and implementing new product concepts.

We provide market-competitive compensation packages, inclusive of base pay, incentives, benefits, and equity. It would not be typical for someone to be hired at the top end of range for the role, as actual pay will be determined based on several factors, including experience, skills, and qualifications. The target compensation ranges are listed.

Base Salary Range Region 1:$116,800 - $168,000
Base Salary Range Region 2: $99,200 - $142,800
