Job Title: Engine Concept Designer

Salary: £55,516 + per annum Dependent Upon Experience

Location: Peterborough, Cambridgeshire

The role requires office attendance five days per week.

About IPSD

Caterpillar’s Industrial Power Systems Division (IPSD) designs, tests and manufactures 0.5 to 18L Cat® and Perkins engines that power over 5000 applications including Marine, Petroleum, Industrial Applications, Electric Generators, and Locomotives. The Opportunity

We are currently seeking an Engine Concept Designer to join our Engineering Team. This exciting role will assist our Engine Architects and Engineers in the initial design phase as we develop internal combustion engines and other power systems to meet future market needs. The successful candidate will work closely with Product Management and Engineering system and component teams to produce concepts which will allow us to investigate innovative technologies, improve our engine capabilities and extend our market share.

What You Will Do

As a Senior Engineer in the team, you will be an experienced design engineer with comprehensive knowledge of combustion engine systems and an ability to collaborate effectively to understand and meet the objectives of concept design requests.

  • Create design concepts to incorporate innovative technologies into existing engines in support of New Technology Introduction (NTI) projects.

  • Explore creative design solutions to improve engine performance and resolve existing issues.

  • Select and adapt engine options to meet the needs of prospective customers, attending workshops as required with Engine Architects, Product Managers, and customers to develop acceptable solutions.

  • Develop early engine geometries using basic scantlings and early product objectives to aid review and assist the development of the project business case.

What You Will Need

  • Deep knowledge of combustion engine and power system technologies.

  • Ability to express general schemes and detailed design using CAD tools.

  • Strong focus on customer needs.

  • Talent for initiating action and influencing others.

  • Problem-solving and analysis skills.

  • Good planning and organisational skills.

Candidates will have gained the following skills and experience through previous roles:

Technical Excellence:

  • Deep design experience – backed up with simulation and calculation skills – of engine systems for compression and spark ignited engines using varied fuel sources.

  • Good understanding of component manufacturing principles & processes.

Influence/Negotiation Skills:

  • Collaboration skills to agree design proposals which balance the needs for performance and durability with cost and manufacturing requirements.

Time Management:

  • Self-motivation and an ability to manage and deliver tasks to meet established commitments.

Additional Desirable skills and knowledge include:

  • Experience with hybridisation and electrification of power systems.

  • Experience in component and engine validation & verification.

  • Knowledge and use of Creo and Teamcenter.

  • Familiarity with Microsoft O365 products.
