About IPSD

Caterpillar’s Industrial Power Systems Division (IPSD) designs, tests and manufactures 0.5 to 18L engines that not only power Caterpillar machines, but also power over 5000 other applications including Marine, Petroleum, Industrial Applications, Electric Generators, and Locomotives. Job Summary

The Industrial Power Systems Division has an exciting opportunity for an Experimental Diesel Mechanic in Chillicothe, Illinois. As a Research and Experimental Mechanic at Caterpillar Inc., you will continuously improve process efficiency by performing the assembling, fitting, and adjusting and/or dismantling required in the construction or disassembly of experimental engines. Individuals will work on experimental, pre-production, post-production and legacy engines that range in size from 0.5 L to 18.0 L.

Additional Information:

  • The hourly payrate is $29.41.

  • This position will require union membership, and an annual fee will be required

  • Schedule: Monday - Friday, 1:00-9:00PM

  • Overtime as business needs

  • Relocation assistance is not available for this position.

What you will do:

  • Apply engineering theory and design

  • Work from Pro-E models, VisView models, blueprints, and verbal instructions

  • Assist in the installation and removal of engines in a dynamometer test cell

  • Assist in assembly of engine cooling, air, and fuel systems

  • Install necessary test leads, thermocouples, cylinder pressure pick-up, and instrumented test components

  • Perform adjustments on valve train, gear train, fuel system, cooling system, and oil system

  • Assemble entire new designs or the buildup of subassemblies

  • Aid in the assembly of intake and exhaust piping, instrumented fuel and cooling lines, and modified wiring harnesses

  • Collaborate with engineers on improvements to experimental and present production models

  • Evaluate and determine reusability of engine hardware during engine assembly

  • Uses various precision tools to verify accuracy of engine component assembly

  • Utilize common mechanic's hand tools, portable power tools, power presses, simple machines tools, and powered crane to assemble engines to final configurations

  • Provide constructive feedback to engineering on difficulties occurring during assembly/disassembly to assist in determining part failure analysis

What you will have:

  • Minimum of 3 years of hands-on experience in the diesel or gas engine service or repair industry, or a 2-year technical degree or certification in diesel technology, automotive technology, or a related field.

  • Ability to think critically with minimal support or instruction

  • Strong adherence to safety and quality policies

What would make you a top candidate:

  • 5+ years’ experience with diesel engines

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to sit or stand for prolonged periods of time

  • Ability to perform repetitive operations

  • Ability to lift at least 20lbs.
