About Arsenale Bioyards
Arsenale is reimagining industry for the neo-industrial age — building a new production infrastructure grounded in biology, intelligence, and regeneration. Our proprietary platform unites precision fermentation, advanced hardware, sensing, and AI to enable nature-aligned manufacturing at scale. We are a collective of neo-industrialists — curious, critical minds united by a commitment to reshaping how the world makes things. International by nature, we work across disciplines and borders, bound by shared values. English is our corporate language. If you’re drawn to systems thinking, deep complexity, and the possibility of building something fundamentally new — we’d like to meet you.
The Opportunity
This is a critical, hands-on role for an emerging HSE professional who is passionate about applying theory in a real-world, innovative environment. You will be the on-site operational arm of our expert external RSPP (Head of Prevention and Protection Service). Your mission will be to implement the best practices and safety strategies defined by our RSPP, becoming the go-to person for safety on the ground. You will be mentored directly by our RSPP, gaining invaluable experience with the goal of growing into a certified RSPP yourself. You will act as a dedicated safety partner to our world-class teams involved in fermentation, analytics, and microbiology. Your role is to learn the intricacies of their highly specialized work and collaborate with them to integrate Italian safety requirements seamlessly into their processes. You will empower them by taking ownership of the formal safety responsibilities, allowing them to focus on innovation
What You'll Do
- Collaborative Safety Partnership: Partner with our expert technical teams to understand their unique processes. Provide specialized H&SE guidance tailored to their work, ensuring that all activities meet Italian regulatory standards and internal safety standards, while supporting their innovative goals. Your role is to be an enabler and facilitator, helping teams achieve their objectives safely and efficiently.
- Integrated Risk Management: Support the identification, assessment, and monitoring of all health and safety risks, with a special focus on chemical agents (e.g., methanol, ammonium hydroxide) and our unique biotechnological processes. You will be a key contributor to the Risk Assessment Document (DVR) and operational safety procedures, ensuring compliance with Legislative Decree 81/08 and European Regulations (REACH, CLP).
- Risk Assessment & Compliance: You will be responsible for the proactive identification, assessment, and monitoring of all health and safety risks inherent in our chemical and biotechnological processes. Your primary output will be the continuous development of the Risk Assessment Document (DVR) in full compliance with D.Lgs. 81/08.
- Mitigation & Control Design: Based directly on your risk assessments, you will then take the lead in identifying and defining the specific technical and procedural solutions—including preventive measures, protective equipment, and engineering controls—required to mitigate all identified risks to an acceptable level.
- Hands-On Process Engineering: Personally develop and implement safety protocols for bioreactor management. You will work with process experts to develop specific safety protocols for work with complex machinery.
- Fire Prevention & Emergency Management: Ensure compliance with fire prevention regulations for the storage and handling of flammable liquids (e.g., methanol), oversee the design and maintenance requirements for explosion-proof electrical systems, and define and coordinate emergency procedures for spills, fires, and exposures. Administrative & Compliance Management: Take ownership of the administrative tasks related to safety and environmental compliance. You will manage all declarations, documentation, and communications required by Italian authorities (e.g., Fire Brigade, ASL, City Council). This includes managing environmental permitting processes for wastewater discharge, gas exhausts, and other emissions, coordinating with external consultants when needed, and ensuring all environmental communications with local authorities are properly maintained and documented.
- Training and Culture Building: Help develop and deliver practical training programs. More importantly, you will act as a daily safety champion, fostering a proactive culture where every team member feels ownership over our collective well-being.
- Fire Prevention and Flammable Substances Management:
- Ensure compliance with Italian fire prevention regulations (D.M. 31/07/34, D.P.R. 151/2011) for the storage and handling of flammable liquids like methanol.
- Oversee the scope, design, installation and maintenance of electrical systems and grounding systems in hazardous areas.
- Define emergency procedures (spills, fires, exposures) and coordinate first aid and firefighting teams.
- Digitalization and Innovation in Safety:
- Promote the adoption of digital tools and technologies based on AI and sensor technology for risk assessment, compliance monitoring, and document management.
- Utilize data analysis to identify emerging risk patterns and optimize the allocation of preventive resources.
- Training and Safety Culture:
- Propose and organize specific information and training programs for workers on chemical and biological risks and safety procedures.
- Foster a proactive safety culture within the company, encouraging reporting and continuous improvement.
- Compliance and Institutional Relations:
- Keep safety documentation updated and manage relationships with external regulatory bodies (e.g., Fire Brigade, ASL).
- Be responsible of all the declarations and certificates to authorities (e.g., dogana).
- Facility Management & Operations:
- Safety induction of the plant
- Understanding of facility schematics (map, plan, disposal etc.)
- Building maintenance, testing and inspection, facility maintenance planning
- Space organisation and management
- Role that can centralise everything environmental
- Interfacing as part of the role with Zero, suppliers / other partners/ other plants
