Job Summary
An IMS DB Application Database Administrator (DBA) is responsible for the design implementation maintenance and performance tuning of IBM Information Management System (IMS) databases within a mainframe environment. This role ensures the availability integrity and security of critical data used by enterprise applications.
Responsibilities
Extensive experience with IMS DB administration and Fast Path databases.
Proficiency in IMS utilities.
Strong understanding of IMS architecture control blocks and logging mechanisms.
Experience with performance monitoring and tuning of IMS databases.
Troubleshooting and problem-solving skills in a complex mainframe environment.
Ability to work effectively in a team environment and communicate clearly.
Knowledge of mainframe operating systems (z/OS) and related tools (JCL TSO/ISPF File Manager)
Experience in BMC tools is an added advantage
Install configure and maintain IMS databases and related software (e.g. IMS DB DBRC).
Perform routine database maintenance tasks including space management.
Monitor database performance identify bottlenecks and implement tuning strategies to optimize efficiency.
Troubleshoot and resolve IMS database-related issues and application problems.
Manage IMS control blocks (DBDs PSBs ACBs) and ensure their consistency and correctness.
Assist application developers with database design including defining IMS database structures (Full Function Fast Path) secondary indexes and logical relationships.
Provide guidance on IMS database access methods and calls (e.g. DLI BMP SSA).
Implement and maintain security measures to protect IMS database integrity and data access.
Utilize IMS utilities (IBM and BMC) for database management and performance analysis.
Work with IMS system programmers on system upgrades patches and version migrations.
Possess working knowledge of z/OS JCL TSO/ISPF and related mainframe tools.
Collaborate with other IT teams (e.g. application development infrastructure operations) to ensure smooth functioning of IMS environments.
Provide technical support and guidance to less experienced staff.
