BACKGROUND 

A beautiful estate in Hampshire, located within the South Downs National Park, is looking for an apprenticeship joiner and carpenter.  No experience or qualifications required, just a passion for creativity and learning.

Rotherfield is a progressive mixed farming estate near Alton.  It comprises residential, commercial and agricultural property as well as commercial farming, forestry, environmental management and has recently opened an Alternative Provision School.  We are on a mission to continuously improve our buildings and infrastructure across the Estate, by making thoughtful choices as to how we approach maintenance, conservation, refurbishment and repair.  

POSITION 

As Apprentice Joiner/Carpenter you will be working with a mix of timber felled from Rotherfield, as well as a mix of structural and decorative timbers. You will be learning from the senior carpenter to restore and conserve our heritage woodwork at Rotherfield.  Carpentry at Rotherfield is highly valued and all our work is undertaken with the ambition to create long lasting structures to serve future generations.  This is a full time role working both in our Joinery Work Shop at Rotherfield Park and on projects across the estate.  

The right candidate will be required to pass a 3 month probationary period before being enrolled in a college course. This is full time role (40hours/week) and once college begins, time for college attendance and study will be incorporated.

Duties will include supporting: 

  • Carpentry and joinery of all natures including large scale timber framing. 
  • Procurement of specified timbers both internally selected from the Estate (liaising with the Woodland Team) and externally from the market. 
  • Work to meet works schedules.  
  • Carpentry related repairs on Estate properties as and when required. 
  • A safe and compliant workshop, working to Health and Safety regulations.
  • Maintaining and storing machinery and equipment.
  • Gain an understanding of timber milling, storage, timber conversion and management.

Requirements

The ideal candidate would meet the following criteria: 

  • Have an interest in heritage joinery and carpentry.
  • Willingness to upskill themselves and integrate into a multi skilled team.
  • A team player who is flexible and adaptable and will work within a works schedule.
  • Ability to work with the utmost discretion.
