At Randstad Defence, we’re proud to be partnering with Electro Optic Systems (EOS)—a leading force in the design, development, and manufacturing of advanced systems— currently seeking a Laser Scientist/Engineer to join their team in Canberra.


The candidate must be an Australian citizen and be eligible for a security clearance.


About the role:


The position is for a Laser Scientist or Engineer within the EOS Space Systems Research & Development (R&D) team. A successful candidate is expected to undertake laser design, assembly, alignment, testing and maintenance. Also, writing technical documentation and reporting is also part of the routine.


Key Responsibilities:


  • Assist with the development of new laser subsystems, primarily high energy lasers for ground-to-space applications. Includes laser design, component specification, assembly, optical alignment, and optimisation.
  • Work alongside other engineering disciplines and communicate system requirements.
  • Contribute to the instrumentation of cutting-edge opto-electronics subsystems.
  • Combine novel technologies or concepts to support the innovation and development of EOS IP.
  • Support the Engineering teams and communicate activity and progress to the respective discipline manager and VPs.
  • Undertake and document investigative experiments to inform the company’s research activities.

Qualifications and Experience:


  • Bachelor’s degree in Physics/Engineering or a related field.
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience with bulk solid-state and/or laser systems.
  • Experience with the alignment and operation of Class 4 lasers, pulsed and CW.
  • Excellent documentation and communication skills.
  • Experience with Matlab or a programming language (Python, C++) is desirable.
