Your Work Shapes the World at Caterpillar Inc.
When you join Caterpillar, you're joining a global team who cares not just about the work we do – but also about each other. We are the makers, problem solvers, and future world builders who are creating stronger, more sustainable communities. We don't just talk about progress and innovation here – we make it happen, with our customers, where we work and live. Together, we are building a better world, so we can all enjoy living in it.
Join Caterpillar’s Autonomy team and lead a 12‑Month Autonomy Site Launch in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula.
In this site‑based role, you’ll lead the implementation and operational ramp‑up of Command for Hauling at an active quarry operation, working shoulder‑to‑shoulder with a customer to deliver safe, reliable, and efficient autonomous hauling.
Why this role is different:
Career‑accelerating 12‑month assignment (Michigan’s Upper Peninsula): Own the site implementation as Caterpillar’s on‑site lead, put autonomy into production, and build a portfolio of measurable results.
Live where you love the outdoors: Lakes, trails, skiing, snowmobiling, hiking, fishing—enjoy an incredible four‑season lifestyle while doing high‑impact work.
Shift Schedule: This position follows a fixed schedule of four consecutive 12-hour shifts, followed by three days off.
From Deployment to Impact—Relocate to a Caterpillar Hub: Relocation to Peoria, IL (or another designated Caterpillar location) is required following the initial assignment. This move enables you to join our Field Operations Support team, where you’ll play a key role in supporting multiple autonomy sites across the region.
What you’ll do
Lead on‑site implementation of MineStar Command for Hauling—plan readiness, coordinate go‑live, and drive stabilization to target KPIs (utilization, queueing, cycle time, interaction management).
Coach and upskill customer teams (operations and maintenance) to ensure safe, effective, and sustainable system use; build local champions.
Troubleshoot and optimize across onboard and off‑board systems: machine control, network/communications, and electronic system integration—both in the field and remotely.
Champion safety and continuous improvement, embedding best practices and leading corrective actions.
Provide remote support and conduct scheduled site visits after deployment to sustain performance.
Partner with internal engineering and product teams to resolve issues, enhance system performance, and prioritize improvements.
Capture Voice of Customer insights to influence product roadmaps.
Support dealers with machine conversions and readiness activities.
Contribute to Remote Operations Support, building processes, tools, and team capability as autonomy scales.
What you’ll bring:
Technical Excellence: Strong proficiency in mining and quarry technologies: machine control systems, off‑board communications, and electronic system integration. Hands‑on experience implementing or supporting MineStar Command for Hauling in operational environments. Backgrounds that thrive here include: Onboard Specialist, Command Service Engineer, Pit Technician, or similar in mining operations/controls.
Field Support Mindset: Proven post‑sales/field support experience and hardware maintenance capability in demanding, production settings.
Problem Solving: Ability to anticipate, diagnose, and resolve organizational, operational, and process issues.
Communication Skills: Excellent customer‑facing communication; able to work autonomously on site while partnering effectively with complex, cross‑functional teams.
Analytical Skills: Strong diagnostic approach for electronic systems and networks; aptitude with logs/telemetry to understand root cause.
Top candidates will also have:
A degree in Electrical, Mechanical, or Mining Engineering (or equivalent practical experience).
Hands‑on experience with Command for Hauling onboarding, Terrain, AOZ access, Command Builder, and Pit Technician tools.
Your 12‑Month Development Outcome
By the end of the assignment, you’ll be able to point to:
End‑to‑end leadership of an autonomy site launch, from readiness through operational handover.
A trusted SME reputation with customers, dealers, and Caterpillar product teams.
A clear path into Remote Operations Support and broader autonomy leadership opportunities in Peoria or other Caterpillar hubs.
Additional Information:
This assignment requires a 12-month relocation to Michigan’s Upper Peninsula; domestic relocation assistance will be provided.
Caterpillar will provide company-paid, furnished housing for the duration of the 12-month assignment.
