About the Role: 

The Engineering Manager will be responsible for line management and functional leadership of a multi-faceted engineering team including Full-stack, Front-end, Mobile, and Platform Engineers.

Additionally, they will be continuously uplifting the engineering function of the business across security, reliability, culture, code quality, innovation, team growth and succession, and working closely with other functional and line managers to streamline the delivery operation of the Technology team.

Requirements

What does a day in the life look like?

Leadership

  • Line manage, engage, mentor and lead a team of engineers of various specialties, including Fullstack, Frontend, Mobile, and Platform Engineers, and other software engineering as required.
  • Ensure adherence across the team to data privacy, security, reliability, and overall quality standards.
  • Provide outcome based domain and thought leadership in the data space, across various functional teams and business units, including Application Engineering, Data Engineering, Products, Delivery, and others.
  • Continuously uplift the engineering function of the Technology department across security, reliability, cultural, coding, delivery, and innovation pillars.
  • Work closely with the Head of Engineering on recruitment and succession plans.
  • Ensure good skill coverage of both hard, soft and domain skills across the engineering team.
  • Work alongside peer technical managers to ensure standardized adaptation of processes and frameworks.
  • Provide and support a governance framework for the engineering teams.
  • Provide escalation support when delivery projects or scrums encounter significant problems.

Technical

  • Adhere to data privacy, security, reliability, and overall quality standards.
  • Apply solution design skills and input into architecture.
  • Be hands on with code as and when required.
  • Research and make recommendations for implementation of the latest technologies where feasible.
  • Manage the ongoing modernization program of technical assets in the data domain, such as language/runtime support, infrastructure versions, patch compatibility, etc.

About You 

Essential experience & skills

  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills.
  • Strong leadership skills and tools with a proven track record of managing, mentoring, and leading a team of engineers.
  • Strong recruitment skills.
  • Strong agile and project management skills.
  • Excellent understanding of the software development lifecycle, its processes, and various tooling across each of its stages.
  • A minimum of 10 years software engineering experience, delivering across multiple technologies and platforms in a commercial environment.
  • Ability to present your ideas and proposals to senior management, peers and reports.
  • An ability to be able to apply both best practices and innovation, in equal measure, to deliver across a complex operating environment.
  • Broad knowledge of solutions architecture, technical architecture designs, standards, and advanced corporate information system concepts.
  • Tertiary qualifications in Information Technology.
