We’re looking for an experienced and strategic Engineering Manager to lead our State team—the group responsible for Zapier’s data storage infrastructure. This role is critical to maintaining customer trust by ensuring our systems are scalable, reliable, and aligned with broader company goals.
You’ll lead a senior, high-performing team that owns and evolves Zapier’s data stores—including MySQL, Postgres, ElastiCache, and Redis. As their manager, you’ll set direction, drive execution, and collaborate cross-functionally to enable the platform capabilities Zapier needs as we grow.
The State team advises engineering teams across Zapier on how to design stateful services, helps anticipate and resolve storage scalability challenges, and ensures data infrastructure supports the needs of the business. With no dedicated Product Manager in this space, the Engineering Manager plays a dual role—providing both strategic and operational leadership.
This is a hands-on management role focused on:
Setting technical direction and long-term vision for the team and infrastructure.
Driving initiatives like data migrations, scaling strategies, and infrastructure modernization.
Partnering with senior ICs to turn high-level platform goals into actionable engineering work.
Ensuring Zapier’s database systems are reliable, performant, and ready to meet emerging needs like data residency and enterprise growth.
If you're eager to lead high-impact projects at a fast-growing, profitable, and remote-first company, read on!
Lead and support a team of senior engineers and SREs working on Zapier’s core data infrastructure.
Define and drive team strategy and roadmap in alignment with company and platform goals.
Own the reliability, performance, and scalability of Zapier’s data stores (MySQL, Postgres, ElastiCache, Redis).
Work cross-functionally with engineering leadership and senior ICs to ensure technical priorities are well understood and executed effectively.
Contribute to org-level planning by identifying infrastructure needs that shape business capabilities.
Guide the team through architectural transitions and technical migrations.
Build a strong team culture rooted in autonomy, trust, and continuous learning.
Proactively manage team performance and growth through feedback, coaching, and development planning.
You’ve led senior-level engineering teams, ideally in platform, infrastructure, or SRE-focused spaces.
You have experience guiding teams without a dedicated PM—shaping roadmap and strategy in ambiguous contexts.
You’re comfortable leading cross-functional planning and turning strategy into clear execution paths.
You bring a strong understanding of data infrastructure, with experience in systems like MySQL, Postgres, Redis, and ElastiCache.
You’re decisive and compassionate when it comes to performance management and know how to grow a healthy, high-performing team.
You communicate clearly, proactively, and build strong relationships across teams and functions.
You’re adaptable and thrive in a dynamic, scaling environment.
At Zapier, we believe that diverse perspectives and experiences make us better, which is why we have a non-standard application process designed to promote inclusion and equity. We're looking for the best fit for each of our roles, regardless of the type of companies in your background, so we encourage you to apply even if your skills and experiences don’t exactly match the job description. All we ask is that you answer a few in-depth questions in our application that would typically be asked at the start of an interview process. This helps speed things up by letting us get to know you and your skillset a bit better right out of the gate. Please be sure to answer each question; the resume and CV fields are optional.
Education is not a requirement for our roles; however, if you receive an offer, you will need to include your most recent educational experience as part of our background check process.
After you apply, you are going to hear back from us—even if we don’t see an immediate fit with our team. In fact, throughout the process, we strive to never go more than seven days without letting you know the status of your application. We know we’ll make mistakes from time to time, so if you ever have questions about where you stand or about the process, just ask your recruiter!
