Intellectual Property and Product Counsel

Notion
Full-time

About Us:

We're on a mission to make it possible for every person, team, and company to be able to tailor their software to solve any problem and take on any challenge. Computers may be our most powerful tools, but most of us can't build or modify the software we use on them every day. At Notion, we want to change this with focus, design, and craft.

We've been working on this together since 2016, and have customers like OpenAI, Toyota, Figma, Ramp, and thousands more on this journey with us. Today, we're growing fast and excited for new teammates to join us who are the best at what they do. We're passionate about building a company as diverse and creative as the millions of people Notion reaches worldwide.

Notion is an in person company, and currently requires its employees to come to the office for two Anchor Days (Mondays & Thursdays) and requests that employees spend the majority of their week in the office (including a third day).

About the Role:

We’re looking for an Intellectual Property and Product Counsel to scale Notion’s investment in patents, trademarks, copyright, and open source while guiding our approach on cutting edge AI data issues. You’ll be the go‑to intellectual property expert for product and go‑to‑market teams, shaping pragmatic policies and maturing programs that protect Notion’s innovation and brand as we ship quickly. In addition, you’ll opportunistically support Notion’s product development teams in a product counsel capacity.

What You'll Achieve:

  • Build a focused, strategic patent portfolio aligned to product roadmaps and run a clear disclosure → decision → filing cadence.

  • Operationalize trademark strategy including naming guidance, global clearance/filings, maintenance, and enforcement.

  • Own copyright and licensing guidance for internal stakeholders, including data usage licenses and third‑party content.

  • Revamp and own our open source policy, compliance, contribution approvals, and developer education; stand up automation where useful.

  • Publish pragmatic guidance on data/AI usage norms and counsel on model/data sourcing, attribution, and IP considerations of AI outputs.

  • Manage outside counsel with clear scopes, budgets, and quality standards.

  • Support product development teams and projects in a product counsel capacity working through issues such as data privacy, regulatory concerns, and Notion’s compliance with customer facing commitments.

Skills You'll Need to Bring:

  • 5+ years of IP experience with a technology company and/or law firm (in‑house experience strongly preferred).

  • Track record building patent and trademark strategies tied to product roadmaps; comfortable with software and AI.

  • Deep familiarity with open source licenses and compliance programs; experience with contribution processes.

  • Strong counseling instincts on copyright/licensing and data/AI usage issues; practical, product‑oriented judgment.

  • Process builder who can implement intake, SLAs, tooling, and reporting; clear writer/presenter who enables non‑lawyers.

  • Desire to expand into product counseling areas as needed.

  • A Juris Doctor (JD) degree and admission to the California or New York bar or ability to be registered as in-house counsel in California or New York.

Nice to Haves:

  • Experience at a fast‑moving SaaS or similar company.

  • Prior experience handling both patent and trademark matters.

  • Demonstrated interest in AI.

We hire talented and passionate people from a variety of backgrounds because we want our global employee base to represent the wide diversity of our customers. If you’re excited about a role but your past experience doesn’t align perfectly with every bullet point listed in the job description, we still encourage you to apply. If you’re a builder at heart, share our company values, and enthusiastic about making software toolmaking ubiquitous, we want to hear from you.
